Driving through the Cape wine lands is an experience. A feast for all senses. The beauty is utterly mesmerizing.. it makes me want to pack up my life in California, pull on my farm boots and start fresh on a beautiful piece of land in Franschhoek.
Every corner is a cameo of beauty, a photographers heaven, but what makes it so special is the preservation of the history of the old french Huguenot architecture, contrasted with incredible design to complement the dramatic landscape.
One of the wineries I visited this past week is a wonderful example of this exhilarating beauty. La Motte – owned and restored by the late Dr Anton Rupert boasts four national monuments built in the 18th century. The most impressive building on the property is their stunning museum featuring an array of South African art, of which the the largest room in the museum is dedicated to the life and art of one of South Africa’s greatest masters, Jacob Hendrik .
La Mott’s restaurant, ‘Pierneef’, offers traditional Cape Winelands cuisine and showcases the talent of Cape Town Interior Designer Christiaan Barnard. The pictures below feature some of the clever and original design amidst the historic beauty of La Motte.
