The South African Wine region moved mountains this week and have finally launched an ‘Ethical seal’ – a program to represent the people living and working on the wineries. The seal confirms that these workers have the right to freedom of association, a living wage and to be protected from unfair discrimination. Jancis Robinson, who recently commented on the Human Rights scathing report, posted about the exciting news this week.

Ethical seal devised for Cape wines

4 May 2012 by Jancis Robinson

Many congratulations to whomever it was who pushed through the hugely significant plans announced yesterday in South Africa to accelerate the implementation of fair labour practices on wine farms and in cellars. It cannot have been that easy to convince a well-established industry that inspections and the creation of this special seal to distinguish all bottles of wine produced to agreed ethical criteria was worth the effort. But this, surely, really is a breakthrough in human terms.

But presumably the concerns of foreign customers such as the Swedish liquor monopoly and the most important retailers of South African wine in the UK must have spurred them on, not least in the light of the contentious Human Rights Watch report on which I commented last October in Cleaning up the Cape.

The not-for-profit Wine and Agricultural Industry Ethical Trade Association (WIETA), established a decade ago and recently beefed up, will monitor compliance. The fair labour initiative is supported not just by foreign retailers but also by all the key players in South African wine: the Food & Allied Workers’ Union (FAWU), Sikhula Sonke, Women on Farms, SA Liquor Brandowners’ Association (SALBA), Wine Cellars SA and the producer organisation VinPro.

Only those producers who, after inspection, are seen to have met WIETA’s criteria of reasonable working conditions will be entitled to use the seal on their wines – this is the grand plan and it is expected that currently compliant producers will start to use the seals later this year. The WIETA code of good practice ‘precludes the use of child labour, asserts that employment should be freely chosen and that all employees should have the right to a healthy and safe working environment. Amongst the conditions it sets are that workers should have the right to freedom of association, a living wage and to be protected from unfair discrimination. Worker housing and tenure security rights should also be respected.’

Head of WIETA Linda Lipparoni explained that ‘the fast-tracking ethical programme would be implemented in three phases, starting with the simultaneous training of workers, owners and management in labour law and the WIETA code of fair trading principles. All training manuals would be supplied free of charge by WIETA.

‘After the initial training phase, all producers would be required to complete assessment forms to determine their level of compliance and would be given further support from WIETA in taking the necessary steps to address gaps. In the final stage of the process, producers would be required to pass a full WIETA audit, involving on-site inspections.’

The weakness, as I see it, is in this little get-out for brand owners, who will have to ‘enter an annually renewable, legally binding agreement with WIETA. To ensure total traceability brand owners would have to identify all their suppliers. At least 60% of these suppliers would also have to be WIETA-accredited, while the other 40% would have to demonstrate that they were preparing themselves for accreditation.’ Anyone can show they are ‘preparing themselves’ for something, can’t they? I would suggest that those famous ‘rotten apples’ (see wine writer Tim James’s thoughtful reaction to this latest news at grape.co.za) will rattle comfortably around in this 40% let-out clause for quite a while. And I’m a bit saddened by the conditional tense.

But that is my only cavil. I am really thrilled and impressed by this initiative and can only marvel at the mountain-moving that must have gone on behind the scenes.

WIETA will be working with Wines of South Africa (WOSA), who will promote the new ethical seal, along with Fairtrade and Fair for Life, to trade and consumers. For more information visit www.wieta.org.za.

Su Birch of WOSA comments:

I am not too concerned about the 40% showing progress. They will have to have made real tangible progress within a year or the right to use the seal will not be renewed. We have discussed this with the unions and labour organisations at the WIETA exco.

I don’t see a soft version of accreditation getting through, while we have organisations like Women and Farms and Sikula Sonke on the board and whose credibility is on the line.

I think the challenge will be getting thousands of small producers through the system in time to meet the demand that the global trade will put on South Africa.

Tim James adds:

At the recent Franschhoek Wine Valley board meeting and at its preceeding Vignerons Owners Forum, it was decided that full WIETA accreditation and certification will become a requirement for membership.

That means all of the members of the Vignerons de Franschhoek will have to comply and undergo audit. Farms supplying grapes to Vignerons will also be required to fully comply.

‘As a wine route, we challenge the other wine routes to match this commitment,’ say Franschhoek’s Vignerons.

My grandmother used to make the best frikkadels, we used to dip them in Mrs Balls Chutney (yes, I know, the name is well, err, interesting). We borrowed this recipe from our friends at WOSA (Wines of South Africa), as we begin introducing more of the SA culinary side of life. Eat these guys warm or cold, they make the best snack ANY time of the day.

Ingredients

2.2 pounds lean ground lamb
½ cup soft fresh breadcrumbs
½ cup finely chopped onions
2 eggs
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground coriander
2 teaspoons salt
freshly ground black pepper
¼ cup vegetable oil
1 cup beef stock, fresh or canned
1 tablespoon flour
1 tablespoon cold water

Method

Patties
1. Combine the meat, breadcrumbs, onions, eggs, nutmeg, coriander, salt and a few grindings of pepper in a bowl. Knead vigorously with both hands, then beat with a spoon until the mixture is smooth and fluffy.
2. Divide the mixture into 12 equal portions and shape each one into a round, flattened patty about 3cm thick and 5cm in diameter.
3. In a heavy 25-30cm skillet, heat the oil over moderate heat until a light haze forms above it. Brown the patties in the hot oil, 5 or 6 at a time, turning them with a slotted spatula and regulating the heat so that they color richly and evenly on both sides without burning. As they brown, transfer the patties to a plate.
4. Pour off the fat remaining in the skillet and in its place add the stock. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring constantly.
5. Return the patties to the skillet.
6. Reduce the heat to low, cover partially and simmer for 30 minutes and remove the frikkadels from the pan.

Sauce
1. Make a smooth paste of the flour and water and whisk it into the remaining liquid in the pan.
2. Cook, stirring frequently, until the sauce comes to a boil and thickens lightly.
3. Pour the sauce over the frikkadels or serve separately.

The Beauty of De Trafford

When you think of the region of Stellenbosch you automatically think of South African wine, wine that is crafted with skill and care on the sunny, mountainous slopes to the east of Cape Town at wineries respected across the world. The Trafford family have owned Mont Fleur Farm in Stellenbosch since 1976 and during their time there have created a strong variety of wines from their Chenin Blanc to their Merlot. All their brands are sourced from the very best fruit and vines from sites across the optimal areas of the mountains and formed with precise, traditional methods.

What makes this South African wine maker stand out from the host of other wineries and producers in this renowned region is their focus on development, experimentation and the contemporary. This was apparent from the very beginning when the Mont Fleur farm suffered the initial setback of not being able to work commercially until 1994. Instead of viewing this as a problem, the Trafford family used the time to perfect their craft by experimenting with their own personal collections. Once they could finally go into business they had the knowledge and confidence to create a strong range and perfect the unusual Straw Wine – where grapes dry on straw for extra flavour to form a dessert wine rarely seen anywhere else in South Africa. Today they continue their progression and contemporary edge with the new Sijnn range and the use of Rita Trafford’s painting on the de Trafford Chenin Blanc labels.

Ultimately, this attitude and modern edge to South African wine does not detract in any way from the overall quality of the product and the attention to detail. The team may be small but they are dedicated and have used their expertise and creativity to great effect – especially with the master Hendry Hess overseeing production – to create a diverse range other Stellenbosch wineries would envy.

Peter Falke Winery, photograph by Mark Serra

We have certainly traveled many of the wine routes in South Africa, and sometimes we stumble upon absolute gems (like the Peter Falke Winery pictured above). Each one is unique in its own way, whether its the modern interior design, the outstanding wines, or general authenticity that separates them from the rest. Many people traveling from the US have contacted us before embarking upon their journeys, and we try to give as much information as possible, after all, we are Ambassadors for the South African Winelands! We found this blog post from someone who visited a few wineries in Stellenbosch in case any of you wanted a few tips!

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

The wine route within a wine route

Published: 05 Apr 12 – Matthew Bougas

Wine lovers in Stellenbosch are truly spoilt for choice with so many different wineries concentrated in a relatively small geographical area; one could quite conceivably visit 10 different estates in as many kilometres. Recently I whiled away a slow Saturday morning tasting some pretty decent wines from 4 different estates, all within a 2km radius of each other.

All situated along the “wine route within a wine route” that is Annandale Road, my suggestion is start at the top of the hill and gently free wheel down….

Uva Mira

One visit to Uva Mira and you can see why their catchphrase is Wines with Altitude. Perched roughly 500 meters above sea level, the boutique winery offers views second to none. The spectacular vista stretches from the expansive Atlantic Ocean, wraps around Cape Point and stretches off up the West Coast and, on a clear day, you can even make out that stalwart of Cape Town tourism, Robben Island.
Uva Mira is most renowned for their Single Vineyard Chardonnay, voted “The Best Chardonnay in the World” at the 2006 International Wine and Spirit Competition; not bad for a self-proclaimed boutique winery.
My Top Tip: Join them during the summer months for their famous Friday evening sun downers – nothing winds down a busy week better than enjoying a chilled glass of chardonnay while watching the sun set behind Table Mountain.

Hidden Valley

Directly below Uva Mira is the picturesque Hidden Valley Winery. Nestled between olive groves with a few ornate ponds thrown in for good measure, Hidden Valley is probably one of the most aesthetically pleasing wineries I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting. Architecture nuts will appreciate the very slick, modern winery – all glass and chrome – which is neatly juxtaposed against the raw earth behind it.
If you’re in the market for a wedding venue, I would highly recommend you get in touch with the Hidden Valley team, I’m told that they put on a very decent function with exceptional attention to detail. And, with a setting like Hidden Valley as your backdrop, your wedding photos will look like something out of a bridal magazine.
My Top Tip: Hidden Valley will rustle you up a very decent cheese platter to enjoy outside on the lawn, all washed down with their 2010 Sauvignon Blanc of course.

Ernie Els

A stone’s throw away from Hidden Valley, wedged between monolithic granite boulders, is the ever impressive Ernie Els Winery. From the plush leather couches to the framed pictures of the man himself, the Ernie Els tasting room oozes excellence – a quality inherent in every aspect of the tasting experience, including their tasting room staff who are always polite, presentable and knowledgeable.
Take a wander outside and on a raised patch of grass you’ll find a golf ball all teed up and ready to go, a subtle homage to the winery’s namesake. I would recommend you leave your clubs in the car though; having a “longest drive competition” with your mates is generally frowned upon…
My Top Tip: Ernie Els Signature 2007 – amazing!

Peter Falke Wines

Definitely the funkiest winery I’ve ever visited, the Peter Falke tasting room looks like something out of a Contemporary Design magazine. There’s a distinct “Euro chic” feel to the place, reminiscent of a high-end Italian boutique with white tiles, gilded chandeliers and hardwood shelves displaying all kinds of home ware and objet d’art ranging from hand-blown glass to one of a kind pocket knives.
My Top Tip: Make this winery your last port of call, with plenty of comfy seating available in the outdoor lounge overlooking the rolling lawns and the giant red corkscrew art, it’s a great place to end off a long day of tasting.

So, if you have a Saturday morning free for a tasting session but don’t feel like driving around too much, why not consider Annandale road, the wine-route within a wine-route.

A recent article posted in the Mail and Guardian listed the top 20 wineries in the Western Cape, voted by 29 Professionals from Britain and South Africa. It’s difficult to distinguish the absolute best from this category as there are so many excellent contenders. It’s not, however, reflective of any US vote, although many wineries listed below we can find in the States or are making their way here. You can find a few of their wines in our store

Raise a glass of the Cape’s finest to our top 20 wineries

TIM JAMES: CORKSCREWED - Apr 05 2012

The first stirrings of a revolution in South African wine became noticeable around the time that Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as president. Suddenly, Cape wine could creep out from under its stone and find a welcome in the wider world — and learn in that brighter light what was wrong with itself and even, a little, what was right. This set in motion a remarkable process of change, of extraordinary and exciting developments in the wine industry, even if the social aspect lagged somewhat. In 2001, in the context of the early years of the wine revolution, I conducted a poll of local wine professionals to establish a top 20 list of producers. Continuing change meant new entrants to the game and ever-shifting reputations, and it was worth repeating the exercise in 2003, 2006 and 2010 — and again now. This is not a definitive list — how could it be, especially when the number of producers and brands has doubled in the last decade or so alone and no one can regularly monitor them all? But to make it at least plausible, I persuaded 29 professionals with different perspectives to do the poll: five sommeliers, five retailers, four eminent critics from Britain — South Africa’s biggest foreign wine market — and 15 local wine writers and judges. Each submitted two lists, one giving, in any order, their top five wineries and the other listing another 15 to give an overall top 20.

In the end there was a remarkable degree of consensus hiding behind the large number of wineries nominated. Of those 95 wineries, in fact, 41 were named only once or twice. It is cheering, though, that quality is sufficiently widespread for 54 wineries to have been considered good enough by at least three voters to appear on a top 20 list.

At the peak there was essential agreement and also a new element of consistency in that the top three were the same as in 2010. But previously the top five had been close, whereas now only those three jostled for top spot — and then came a big gap. It is worth noting that the leading three come from different wine regions, reflecting the spread of excellence.

Change continues. There are four new entries this year, one re-entry and five disappearances. Only eight on 2001′s list still find a place in 2012. Of the top five in 2001, two (Vergelegen and Rustenberg) have slid down the rankings and two (Veenwouden and Neil Ellis) have been squeezed out of the list altogether by hungry newcomers.

And just on the outskirts of the top 20 this year are Badenhorst, De Trafford, Hartenberg, Le Riche, Morgenster and Rust en Vrede. They — and new contenders — threaten to break through.
Indeed, a top 20 list in the South African wine world is far from a settled thing.

1 Boekenhoutskloof: This major winery with a magnificently sited base in Franschhoek is one of only eight remaining from the initial 2001 ranking and heads the list for the second time. Boekenhoutskloof’s phenomenal success owes much to both its cellarmaster from the start, Marc Kent, and Tim Rands, its dynamic founder. It is not just that Boekenhoutskloof makes cabernet, shiraz, semillon and noble late harvest wines that are hard to outclass (and often hard to find), the breadth of achievement and sheer growth has been equally impressive. The Chocolate Block red blend is made in locally unmatched quantities given its price and quality; at more easily affordable levels the Porcupine Ridge and Wolftrap wines deliver more than expected at their price points, but that judgment could really be made of all the wines.

2 Sadie Family Wines: This winery tied for second place with Kanonkop in 2010, but had not even released its first wine, Columella 2000, at the time of the first poll in 2001. Since then Eben Sadie has led a quality revolution in the Swartland region and has arguably done more than any single winemaker for South Africa’s international profile as a fine-wine producer. It is a combination of charisma, talent, hard-won experience and sheer hard work. The chenin blanc-based Palladius soon joined Columella and founded a new category of distinctive Cape white blends. The two original Sadie wines, off vineyards that Sadie controls but does not own, have been joined by the Old Vineyard Series — fascinating wines made in necessarily tiny quantities. They are made, like the others, with minimal cellar manipulation, transparently expressing their origins.

3 Kanonkop: Of the great Cape wineries, this family-owned estate is maybe the most lovable: the people are unpretentious and warm and the place is authentically farmlike (not a pompous gateway or grand gable in sight). It is the only winery to have come in the top section of this poll each time it has been conducted — and no other winery can compete with Kanonkop for consistent excellence over 30-plus years. It was Kanonkop that first proved that pinotage grapes could make good wine; its Cabernet Sauvignon and cabernet-based blend Paul Sauer have been illustrious for a generation. Abrie Beeslaar is, significantly, only the third winemaker here since 1973, but his modesty belies his eminence. In fact, Kanonkop has reached the level of the great European domaines in that it is now not really about winemakers, but about soil, slopes and vines — and a tradition of fineness.4 Paul Cluver: It is hard to believe, with Elgin now replete with good wineries, that the first bottling of pioneer Paul Cluver was only in 1997. Not a dud in the mostly white range — the Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Riesling (a brilliant Noble Late Harvest version, too) and Sauvignon Blanc are all among the Cape’s leaders. The sole red is Pinot Noir and it is equally starry.

5 Tokara: Banker G T Ferreira, owner of this grand winery atop the Helshoogte Pass outside Stellenbosch, once remarked that “return on ego” rather than return on investment prompts vineyard purchases. His ego must be gratified as Tokara’s range, made by Miles Mossop, gains increasing prestige. The Director’s Reserves, White and Red stylishly lead the way.6 Chamonix: This year marks a huge ranking leap for this well-established producer, which started dazzling critics and wine-lovers soon after Gottfried Mocke took charge a decade ago. Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay were always good here, but hard, intelligent work in the Franschhoek vineyards and sensitivity and flair in the cellar have worked like magic on the reds, especially the Pinot Noir, now among the Cape’s best.

7 Vergelegen: This magnificent historic estate near Somerset West, owned by Anglo American, has slipped out of the top five, but the wines guided into bottle by obstreperous André van Rensburg are as fine as ever. Perhaps the problem — if there is one — is that the top whites and reds are classically inspired and a little uncompromising, needing time to show their best. 8 Cape Point Vineyards: The vineyards, a mere shout from Noordhoek beach on the Cape Peninsula, are planted mostly to sauvignon blanc, but there is also chardonnay and semillon for the excellent Isliedh blend. Duncan Savage gets many winemaking kudos, but it is his amazing work on the wind-battered vines that allows his wines increasing ripeness and complexity as well as finesse.9 Hamilton Russell: This early champion of chardonnay and pinot noir remains among the leaders of the Hemel-en-Aarde region, just inland from Hermanus, where it was the lonely pioneer in the mid-1970s. Wines are made here only from those two varieties, but with exceptional examples like these (the Chardonnay being particularly fine), that is enough — and the restraint matches the style. 10 Mullineux Family Wines: Another Swartland winery leapfrogs into a high ranking. It is a new entry and it is rare to arrive on the South African scene with the impressive force shown by the fledgling winery of Chris and Andrea Mullineux, whose first bottled vintage was only in 2008. The elegant Syrah, rich White Blend and sweet Straw Wine have deservedly shared the honours — and what honours!

11 Meerlust: Where else has quite this aura of history and fine wine? The wine has never been better since Roelie Joubert started work on the vineyards in 2001 and Chris Williams took over winemaking in 2004. Williams imbued traditional styling with the spice of modernism, expressed through brighter, often riper fruit. The Rubicon red blend is just one of the wines to show reinvigorated class.

12 Thelema: Thelema seemed revolutionary in the late 1980s with proprietor and cellarmaster Gyles Webb’s pure-fruited wines — possibly the Cape’s first emphatically “modern”
winery. A firm structure and essential classicism were also always there, however, and were revealed in the longevity of fine wines such as the Cabernet Sauvignon and the occasionally brilliant Merlot Reserve.

13 Waterford: This estate on Stellenbosch’s famous Helderberg range was hovering just outside 2010′s top 20. Its high entry recognises continuing developments, with the wines gaining in depth and subtlety. The Jem is among the more convincing of local super-priced reds, but the whole range offers reliable high quality — including the cheaper Pecan Stream wines.

14 Jordan: Which Cape winery has quite the same image of consistent sheer professionalism that Gary and Cathy Jordan bring to this family-owned Stellenbosch-kloof winery? They are probably best known for modern, fruit-driven red Bordeaux blends (Cobblers Hill and Sophia) and rich chardonnays, but the whole range delivers quality and value.

15 Bouchard Finlayson: The second-oldest winery in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley continued the tradition of focusing on pinot noir and chardonnay (Peter Finlayson was Hamilton Russell’s winemaker before setting up on his own). Good examples they are, too, but there is also their Sauvignon Blanc — and Hannibal, a bizarre but wonderfully successful red blend.

16 Rustenberg: This historic Simonsberg property is surely one of the most beautiful estates in the country, perhaps the world. Mixed stylistic messages and uncertainties of direction since the mid-1990s have perhaps confused observers. But the wines are good, now settling into a fairly modern style — from the site-specific leaders like Peter Barlow Cabernet down to great-value Ida’s Red.

17 Klein Constantia: A re-entry after an absence. Despite continuing international renown for its sweet elixir Vin de Constance, the reputation of this historic property was tiring — but a reinvigorated team started showing what was possible. And now its new owners since last year are committed to more fine-tuning. Sauvignon Blanc is likely to remain the other star turn.

18 Newton Johnson: A new entry. This quintessential family winery in the Hemel-en-Aarde area has been steadily building its reputation for a decade and a half. The Family Vineyards Pinot Noir confirms the possibilities for real excellence here, but few wineries can match Newton Johnson’s quality across a wide range.

19 Steenberg: These southernmost Constantia vineyards are bundled with upmarket houses and a golf course, but the wines are more than rich people’s playthings — especially the age-worthy whites: excellent Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, not to mention the blends of the two.

20 De Toren: Attention to detail and a clear aesthetic style characterise this Stellenbosch property that debuts on the list. There are two rich, ripe red blends — one usually based on cabernet, the other on merlot — often more appreciated overseas (particularly in the United States) than here.

This popular Wine Estate consists of two wine farms located at opposite ends of this magnificent valley. Their wine success is greatly attributed to their unique core belief that their wine is grown from a mix of sun, soil, vine and man (these meaningful words are prominently displayed on the pillar of a sundial located in the vineyards). The unique geography of the Franschhoek Valley, including the surrounding mountain chains and varying soil types, greatly contribute to the climate which makes this region superb for growing the finest grapes that go into Haute Cabriere’s amazing South African wine.

Some of the many features of the Haute Cabriere Wine Estate include the Haute Cabriere Restaurant, a helicopter landing pad, barrel maturation cellar and a unique wine tasting experience. The Haute Cabriere Restaurant provides a sophisticated, yet comfortable, dining experience with an interior design of colorful artwork and crisp, white linens. Delicious foods are prepared by Chef Ryan Shell with a wine recommendation accompanying every dish. The restaurant also has a beautiful terrace providing picturesque views of the valley, the wine estate and surrounding mountains. Haute Cabriere offers a number of venues for beautiful weddings and many different functions.

The Pierre Jourdan Wine Tasting Cellar, located in close proximity to the restaurant, offers its guests an opportunity to taste their exquisite selection of wines on a daily basis. Saturdays hold a special treat for guests when Achim and his son, treat guests to the ultimate in wine theatre. Visitors are whisked away on the intimate journey through Haute Cabrière’s history and wine philosophy. The use of a famed French cavalry sabre, to open bottle after bottle of Pierre Jourdan Cap Classique, adds the perfect amount of dramatic flair to this exceptional adventure.

The wines of Haute Cabriere Wine Estate are produced under the Pierre Jourdan and Haute Cabriere labels. Some of their finest South African wines under the Pierre Jourdan label consist of a classic champagne blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir such as Brut Sauvage and CUVEE Brut. Haute Cabriere is the only farm located in South Africa to produce Ratafia, a Chardonnay fortified with “potstill” brandy. Belle Rose is a 100% Pinot Noir with an elegant dry finish. The Haute Cabriere label offers Pinot Noir 2008 (100% Pinot Noir), Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2011 (an elegant blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir full of zesty fruit flavour) and Unwooded Pinor Noir 2011 with a brilliant red colour and ripe cranberry and cherry flavours. Haute Cabriere is truly an exceptional wine estate where outstanding South African wines are grown.

A variety of the Cabriere range can be found in Cape Ardor’s wine shop:

Located amongst the picturesque Northern Paarl (which means Pearl in Dutch), Ridgeback and Vansha Wines and Ridgeback Guest House are set on a 62 hectare boutique farm overlooking the Paarl Limietberg Mountains. Originally a large orchard, in 1997 the property was converted by Vansha Farming Ltd into a vineyard, complemented by an exclusive wine tasting centre, restaurant and guest house. The vineyard has since gained the reputation of a premier wine producer.

The trademark of the Ridgeback wines is the Rhodesian Ridgeback, a native dog with a strong affiliation to South African history. These noble animals were close companions of the early pioneers and used by nomadic tribes for lion hunting. The distinctive Ridgeback wines aim to reflect the spirit and uniqueness embodied by this South African symbol. Whilst the premium Ridgeback brand is the hallmark of this vineyard, they also host a entry level brand, Vansha, named after the owner’s daughter Vanessa and son Shaun.

The regional climate combined with the local terrain and granite derived soils provides the perfect growing conditions for a large variety of grapes. Red wines produced include Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Grenache and Mourvedre. White wine varieties include Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc.

Ridgeback strives to produce premium quality wines. Its inaugural red wine produced in 2001, the Ridgeback Shiraz, won a 5 star award in the popular John Platter South African wine guide. Since then the vineyard has continued to produce award winning wines under the Ridgeback label. Ridgeback uses approximately 40 percent of the grapes it produces, with the remainder sole to other prominent wine makers.

A variety of the Ridgeback range can be found in Cape Ardor’s wine shop:

The 320-year-old Solms-Delta Wine Estate, located in the heart of the Western Cape Province, is a unique Franschhoek wine farm dedicated to preserving its rich heritage and giving back to South African communities.

View the Solms Delta wines

This veritable wine farm in the Franschhoek Valley, bordered by the picturesque Groot Drakenstein Mountains, has seen difficult and tumultuous times in its past. The farm was originally established by slave labor and many of their descendants still live there. The historic events and what has happened on the estate throughout the years has played a major role in its revitalization process. Professor Mark Solms, a highly regarded neuroscientist, returned to his South African roots and bought the farm in 2001. He then began the process of revitalizing the historic wine estate.

A museum was established and chronicles the history of the land and events that have taken place so that visitors will have a true understanding of Solms-Delta’s roots.

The mission of Solms-Delta is to bring about positive change that will have a ripple effect. Making a significant contribution to the redevelopment of South Africa and taking care of the people of South Africa is of the utmost importance. With the rebirth of the Solms-Delta wine farm, a trust was established in 2007 which has positively affected the lives of the people who live there. (The social fabric of most South African farms involves working farms operated by the people who live on the land.)

The trust has been intended to address and fix economic and social inequalities of the underprivileged farm residents. It supports a wide range of social, educational, and cultural projects as well as sports and recreation. Education for the next generation is largely focused on engaging farm children in learning and properly preparing the children for school. The Cape Winelands Social Inclusion Award was bestowed upon the Solms-Delta wine farm for “excellent and innovative” strides taken in enhancing the social, cultural and economic well being of the farm workers.

Music has also become a huge part of daily life at Solms-Delta. Joyous music has played a major role in changing the lives of people on the farm. Watch this incredible video from ISAW and notice how music and opportunity has changed so many of these workers lives.

The Solms-Delta wine estate prides itself on its exquisite surroundings, a unique restaurant and formal culinary garden, and the incredible art and science of their winemaking process. Visitors can wander the estate enjoying the peaceful and beautiful surroundings. Private picnics along the lush banks of the Dwars River are also available September to April, arranged through the Fyndraai Restaurant. Wine-tasting is also available daily in the Museum van de Caab or under the beautiful mature oaks outside.

Hilko Hegewisch is the Winemaker at Solms-Delta and loves a challenge as much as he loves wine. He studied winemaking at Elsenburg College and spent 18 years as a Winemaker in the Cape before starting his own company. His adventurous and innovative spirit has made him an ideal choice as Winemaker at Solms-Delta.

The wines of Solms-Delta are handcrafted with integrity and distinction. There are two ranges of wines, Solms-Astor and Solms-Delta. The ancient greek practice of desiccation of the grapes (vine clamped and dried for intensity and a distinct style) is used.

Solms-Astor range consists of three traditional yet unusual Cape blends which are featured in our store:

- Langarm (a red blend)

The beautiful Graham Beck Vineyard

Graham Beck, founder of the Graham Beck Winery South Africa and patriarch of one of the most beloved wine-producing families in South Africa, was a remarkable individual with a passion for life. Graham Beck was born in Cape Town and remained deeply rooted in Africa throughout his life constantly demonstrating his commitment and generosity to the South African community.

In 1983 Graham Beck purchased Madeba, a wine farm situated just outside of Robertson which has grown into a world-class wine estate highly regarded for producing some of the best South African sparkling wine. As a result of the success of the Robertson estate, the second Graham Beck Winery was established in the beautiful Franschhoek Valley. Over the years, Graham’s ambition, passion and extraordinary work ethic has grown into an extremely successful world-class enterprise with vineyards located on four different farms with very diverse climatic conditions. Beck vineyards are located at the Robertson and Franschhoek estates with two others located in the Firgrove area of the Stellenbosch region.

Graham Beck Wine Estate – Robertson

Located in a dry, warm climate in the Breede River Valley along the Little Karoo region, the flourishing vineyards are planted in limestone rich soil which is perfectly suited for producing white varietals with the largest percentage of vines planted under Chardonnay. The very unique wine cellar is divided into three different cellars. The first cellar is exclusively for production of Beck’s South African sparkling wine. It is also for barrel maturation and holds the tasting facilities. After harvest the grapes are sent to Cellar 2 which holds the fermentation process and maturation tanks. The entire bottling and storage process happens in Cellar 3. The Robertson estate offers very warm and welcoming wine tasting facilities that are very stylish in design with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. A perfect atmosphere to taste and savor the finest Chardonnay or Cap Classiques produced by the Beck family.

Irene Waller is the Winemaker at the Robertson estate and did not even come to realize her passion for winemaking until after she completed her studies at the University of Cape Town. She enrolled in the Cape Wine Academy and continued her studies at Stellenbosch University where she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Oenology. She joined the Graham Beck wine family in 2005 and has been on an exciting winemaking journey ever since.

Graham Beck Wine Estate – Franschhoek

Located in the beautiful Franschhoek Valley, seasonal climate conditions such as summers with sunny days and cool nights and winters that are wet with cold temperatures provide for ideal growing conditions for the vineyards situated on a steep terrain with soils laden with sandstone and granite.

The Franschhoek Cellar and Wine tasting facilities are beautifully designed and incorporate contemporary design with old world atmosphere and charm. With picturesque views of the surrounding areas, this distinguished wine estate offers a state-of-the-art wine tasting room with a welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable staff. The tranquil and serene grounds and impeccably landscaped gardens with displays of unique sculptures all give the estate charm and personality.

At the Franschhoek estate, Erika Obermeyer is living her dream as the Winemaker. Erika grew up on a sheep farm in Karoo and loved the simple pleasures of growing up on a farm. While studying medicine at Stellenbosch University she switched directions and went into wine biotechnology. She came to realize her passion was really for a hands-on experience in the winemaking industry and thus began her journey as a Winemaker. She joined the Graham Beck team in 2005 and won woman winemaker of the year!

The South African sparkling wines of Graham Beck include white, red, rose, dessert wines and Cap Classiques. Every Graham Beck wine is produced by a passionate team of individuals that are the heart and soul of the Graham Beck Wineries.

The Beck wine family was deeply saddened by Graham’s passing in 2010 but remain committed to honoring his memory and spirit by continuing his legacy of producing the finest wines of South Africa.

“In the autumn I have an irresistible urge towards Muratie – the melancholy, the sweet passing of the season, resides in the firms name. Everything is organic here: the cellars, one feels, are an extension of nature; they smell of earth and wood and leaves. And not at all so strange: vat after vat looms up in the cellar’s gloom, and at the end of a draughty passage the green of the garden presses against the railings. The cellar smells of nutmeg, in one spot it smells just like nutmeg.” – Hennie Aucamp, Author

The Muratie Cellar and house

Located in historic and exotic South Africa at the foot of the Simonsberg Mountains, Muratie Winery is a destination with a history as rich as the fine wines it boasts. Muratie is a magnificent example of a truly original and unique family winery. With grape vines stretching across 45 hectares, or 113 miles, Muratie is still churning out delicious gourmet wines, just as it did when it all started in 1699.

Entering the cellar

Muratie Winery began when Laurens Campher, a German soldier with the Dutch East India Company, decided to build a farm where he could one day settle down to grow more than grapes; he wanted to grow a family. This dream would not prove easy; Laurens was in love with a beautiful slave girl named Ansela Van de Caab, a love that seemed taboo, and utterly impossible. It took him fourteen years to build Muratie, but Laurens was determined to create the perfect home where his love, Ansela, and their three children would one day live their lives free of slavery. In a fairy tale ending Laurens and Ansela’s dream came true in 1699 when she and her children were freed of slavery, and Muratie Winery was born. Today one of Muratie’s signature wines is named for the star-crossed dreamer, Ansela Van de Caab. View more of their wines in our store.

Passing down through many skilled and attentive owners over the years, Muratie Winery still holds today the elegant charm that it held in its romantic beginnings. With sprawling lands, and an elegant guest house, Muratie welcomes travelers from all over the world, to relax and tour the farm that made history as part of South Africa’s wine culture. Guests are encouraged to taste all of Muratie’s indulgent wines, to tour the vineyards, to dine in the elegant old farm kitchen and to rest their heads under a roof where true love overcame so much adversity. A place for wine lovers, adventurers and dreamers alike, Muratie Winery is truly a trip back in time.

Nestled at the base of the majestic Simonsberg Mountain range in the Western Cape is the fertile Franschhoek Wine Valley where spectacular vineyards cover the mountain slopes that were settled more than 300 years ago by the French Hugenots. The valley is rich, lush farmland perfect for growing grapes used to produce the highest quality wines found in South Africa.

The Beautiful Vrede en Lust Wine Estate

Franschhoek, (the picturesque village just 45 minutes from Cape Town) is home to the Vrede en Lust Winery, a family owned and managed wine estate.

Vrede en Lust has a 300 year old history. It was first established by Jacques de Savoye in 1688 as a wine farm and even centuries ago it was described as “the most beautiful place”.

Tasting Room View

Vrede en Lust is a family oriented wine farm and the families all contribute in some way to the richness found in this wine estate. The winery welcomes its guests with free wine tasting in a comfortable, serene setting and also offers wine tours where guests can experience the wine making process and come in close contact with the grapes.

The winemaker at the lovely Vrede en Lust wine estate is Susan Erasmus, winner of the 2007 Landbou Woman Winemaker of the Year award. Susan’s passion is wine and it is evident in the award winning range of wines produced at Vrede en Lust. Susan Erasmus was born in Cape Town and raised in the Free State, a province of South Africa. She is a graduate of the University of Stellenbosch in Viticulture and Oenology and also spent time abroad in France working in the wine industry. Susan returned to the winelands in 2000 and has worked in collaboration with the owners, Dana and Etienne Buyers, to renew the Vrede en Lust winery and make it the flourishing success it is today.

The winemaking philosophy at Vrede en Lust is to produce the highest quality handcrafted wines that reflect their terroir with minimal intervention in the cellar. The wines are produced in New World Style, some classical and some of a more modern taste. The vineyards are planted where they are best suited to their respective soils. White grapes come from the cool climate Elgin region and red grapes come from the warmer Simonsberg-Paarl vineyards.

View from the Guesthouse

The Vrede en Lust Wine Estate with its peaceful and welcoming atmosphere has much to offer in addition to its stellar winery and vineyards. Cotage Fromage is a restaurant which serves a light, sophisticated breakfast or lunch with live music on Sunday afternoons. There is a deli where you can find 60 different cheeses and a variety of meats and freshly baked breads. The Manor House and Jonkmanshuis offers elegant accommodations to guests of Vrede en Lust boasting old world charm in a modern, bright airy setting. Lavish weddings are also held at Vrede en Lust with its breathtaking scenery as the backdrop.

A view of the Doolhof Wine Estate vineyards, nestled between the breathtaking Groenberg Mountain range and Bain’s Kloof Pass in the Western Cape province of South Africa, is a strikingly beautiful sight. It is here where the first settlers marveled at the many hills and vales and aptly gave it the name Doolhof.Doolhof means Labyrinth in Afrikaans, and it truly does feel like a labyrinth just getting there. Driving along a very windey, dusty road, with thoughts of truly reaching the end of the world, you turn the last corner and the view takes your breath away. The white French-Hugenot architecture found on the property is a stunning contrast to the bright green paddocks and 80 hectares of vineyards. The rest of the land remains uncultivated.Doolhof Estate is approximately 380 hectares and is located at the base of the Groenberg Mountains. The winery is located just outside of Wellington which is a town in the Western Cape in South Africa and its economy is centered around agriculture, primarily the wine industry.

The climate and growing conditions are ideal for growing grapes and the natural water retention in the vineyards is an added bonus.

The soils in this area are the absolute best that can be found in the region and perfect for growing grapes and producing some of the finest South African wine available.

Doolhof Wine Estate hand picks flavorful grapes from their premier vineyards and uses a meticulous winemaking process to produce their unique collection of wines. Two of the Doolhof wines, the 2009 Signatures of Doolhof Malbec and the 2009 Signatures of Doolhof Petit Verdot, have been awarded national winners at the 2011 Sixth Annual Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards.

Cape Ardor’s Doolhof Wine Collection consists of:

The Legends of the Labyrinth:

- Dark Lady 2010: A deep plum and cherry wine overlaid by mocha and chocolate; 100% Pinotage.

Sauvignon blanc is one of my favorite wine varietals the South Africans produce. For me, I can enjoy it year round and as an intro to just about any great meal or social event. My personal preference has been towards the Sauvignon blancs coming from the higher altitude or cooler climate regions (such as Iona from Elgin) that tend to yield more grassy mineral-oriented flavors than the tropical fruit notes produced in the lower or warmer climate regions (such as Darling.) Interestingly, the recent results from the FNB Sauvignon blanc Top Ten 2011 competition may indicate that the Sauvignon blanc palate is migrating towards the more fruit forward characteristics of warmer producing regions.

The 2011 season in South Africa was notably dry and hot and is responsible for the wines emanating a more fruit forward profile.

As noted by Christian Eedes of Wine Magizine, “Sauvignon is arguably one of the ultimate terroir wines in the sense that there is theoretically little in the wine making process which might obscure the impact of site.” as such, the vintage can often serve as a short lived orator of sorts, parlaying details of the growing climate of the given region. (Barring no cross regional blending has been introduced.)

The results of the FNB Top Ten yielded 5 single region winners and 5 cross regional blends winners:

Boschendal Reserve Collection 2011

Clos Malverne 2011

David Niewoudt Ghost Corner 2011

Delaire Coastal Cuvée 2011

Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Limited Release 2011

Franschoek Cellar Statue de Femme 2011

Lutzville Cool Climate 2010

Overhex Soulo 2011

Wade Bales Winemaker Selection Thys Louw 2011

Woolworths [WHAT]? 2011 by Bergsig Estate

While there is relatively nothing new under the Sun trends tend to come and go. So really, wine is about what you enjoy.

So the question to you is what style of Sauvignon blanc do you enjoy most?

-Eric-

A winemaker from the ‘Warm Heart of Africa”.

Ataraxia wines, the Wines of Kevin Grant, are cultivated from one of the finest wine growing regions in South Africa. The Vineyards are located on the most elevated section of the Hemel en Aarde area of the Walker Bay wine-growing district. Ataraxia is on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge to the west of Africa’s southernmost tip, Cape Agulhas, and is situated on an area known as The Skyfields. The breathtaking views of the Babylonstoren mountain range provides a beautiful backdrop for the Ataraxia Vineyards and it couldn’t be in a lovelier or more perfect location.

Kevin and his wife, Hanli, founded Ataraxia in 2004. Kevin received his schooling in Cape Town, South Africa and graduated from the University of Pretoria with a Bachelors of Science degree in Zoology. With an avid, lingering interest in winemaking, Kevin received a diploma in Cellar Technology from the Cape Institute for Agricultural Training, Elsenburg. Kevin worked at high-end estates in South Africa, one being neighboring Hamilton Russell Vineyards, which is one of South Africa’s most successful wineries. In 2004 Kevin and his wife partnered with a few friends and purchased prime vineyard land and set out on a course to make the finest wines possible.

The soils found in the Ataraxia Vineyards are one of the most important elements in producing excellent wines – They dictate which grapes are used. Based on the many soil types that make up the geology of the area and the mild climate due to the close proximity to the South Atlantic Ocean, the Ataraxia Vineyard is in a prime location. The vineyards are planted on elevated, south facing slopes and grapes are always hand picked and sorted with the utmost care and dedication readying them for the meticulous winemaking process.

Ataraxia’s Wine Lounge or wine tasting room was built to look like a little white chapel sitting on the slopes of the vineyard. It is a picturesque setting perfect for contemplation of the three Ataraxia wines, Serenity, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

The Ataraxia wines consist of:

- Serenity (2007) a red wine derived from the “true art of blending”
- Chardonnay (2009) “A chiseled, focussed wine that effortlessly manages to be both subtle and intense”
- Sauvignon Blanc (2010) “A wine of substantial poise, length and charm”

There are plans to add a Pinot Noir to their melodious selection of wines in the near future. In the mean time, you can find these wines in our store.

The first thing that stands out in my mind when I think of Africa is color. Local South African designers use it so easily, where others would rather stick to a neutral palette. The Freedom Cafe in Durban is the perfect example of an exploration of color and clever sustainable design. Look how they turned a 20 foot container into a cozy chic eatery. I’ve always wanted to use one for a conference room or office in a large warehouse space, but this is incredibly imaginative and modern, with the perfect touch of natural and cool.

Originally, this was meant to be Pinot noir, but at the last moment, the grapes she had sourced fell through so, scrabbling around for an alternative, she came up with enough fruit to make three barrels of Shiraz. Foot-stomped on Muizenberg beach, it was labelled as Barefoot Wine Company, but the following year the Pinot was available and nine barrels were made.Initial vintages were interesting rather than outstanding – the first mention of the wine in the Platter Guide reads “Ripe strawberries on autumn forest-floor background, good clean oak, nice vanilla touch at the end” and awarded the 1998 three stars. A decade later, her 2008 became a Five Star success, and, along with business partner Greg Mitchell, she celebrated a decade of great wines with a vertical tasting at Luke Dale-Roberts’s Test Kitchen last week.

For many years, Cathy’s wine has been ‘homeless’, often sneaked into the corner of whichever winery is lucky enough to be employing her at the time. Her tiny garagiste operation has now expanded enough to allow her to make a permanent base in Elgin, but it has been a long journey to reach this goal and she has travelled through many different grapes and terroirs before arriving at the top of Sir Lowry’s Pass.

This was the focus of much of last week’s winetasting, following Cathy as she explored some of the different regions in her search for her perfect Pinot. Her first grapes came from traditionally-successful warmer climes in Stellenbosch from vineyards belonging to Muratie and Bellevue. Here, she made “lovely red wines, but not typical Pinot Noirs” and felt the clones were wrong for her ideal style. Leaving Stellenbosch, she tried fruit from Darling, buying her grapes from Groote Post. Here she found plenty of minerality in the wine, but it lacked acidity, quickly disappearing in the bottle.

2005 was the first year she used fruit from Elgin. Here, the cool night temperatures led to far longer hang-times for the grapes, leaving her with lower alcohols, good acidity and generally better wines all round. Although she has experimented with some grapes from Herold and Benguela Cove, the main focus of her wine since then has been on the different soils and clones available in Elgin “We have about 14 different types here, maybe even more, and because I make wine on a small scale, I am able to keep every single site and clone separately in barrels. The aim is to create a history for each site so that we can better understand why it produces the flavours it does.”

When Cathy talks about blending different barrels, she immediately heads off into the world of classical music “the combination of clone 115 on sandy soils is always Mozart to me!” Describing her job as the conductor of an orchestra may seem a little hackneyed, but this is clearly how Cathy ‘sees’ her wines – “they make music in my mind” and her job as winemaker is to bring them all together in one triumphant symphony. Her hands-on approach and minute attention to detail means that she lives and breathes her wines from vine through to bottle, and her absorption and dedication was clear as she talked us through the different vintages over lunch.

Pinot noir is notoriously tricky and Cathy admits to plenty of heartbreak over the last fourteen years. She doesn’t claim hers is the best Pinot in the country and has only good things to say about her fellow-winemakers, particularly the ‘big-names’ of Walker Bay – “one shouldn’t be dismissive of other styles or terroir – there’s no right or wrong, it’s just different.” The point is that she wants to make the best Pinot according to her own lights. And from the reception of the wines at last week’s lunch, I’d say she should carry right on setting her own standard. The rest of the Pinot-world will just have to play catch-up.
